We’re stuck withthe result: “me too” motorcycles with alot of the original excitement removed.The Ducati 750 Sport slipped throughunscathed. It’s the most exciting streetbike to come along in a long time.From the moment I swung my footover the side and assumed the classicroad racer position on the Ducati, a lit-tle light went on inside my head andsomething said, “this machine is betterthan you are. This machine is fast, pre-cise, controlled, transportation withoutequal.” Do I really want this thing for aroad test? Can I really do the bike jus-tice or will I drop the Ducati or its beau-tiful fiberglass side in front of the wholeworld. Why am I doing this?The first time I saw it the DucatiSport was sitting in Ashford Engineer-ing’s showroom in West Chester, Pa.,glowing softly in the early evening dark-ness. A small neatly lettered sign reading“DO NOT TOUCH” sat on the soloseat. The bike was totally impressive inits functional elegance and purposefulstyle. I was floored.Sitting in it (not on it), hands out-stretched to the Tomaselli clip on bars,feet resting lightly on the rear set pegsand levers I wondered how anyonecould even ride one of these in this po-sition, much less race one. Because ofthe engine design (90 degree V twin) thebike is very narrow, and for a 750 it’svery light (395 pounds). It kick startson the right.
