MatchlessNewModelsOn the eve of the appointment ofCooper Motors, Los Angeles,California, as U.S.A, distributors forAJS and Matchless motorcycles, theA.M.C. firm in London, England, an-nounces their 1956 models.The new range of AJS and Match-less motorcycles is certainly enhancedby the addition of a brand new mod-el ; the 600cc “Super Clubman”. Thismodel, which incorporates all of theproven features of the former rangeof twins, is in effect, a “big brother”to the well known 500cc twins.Another point of interest, is thefact that rigid frames have disap-peared completely from both lines,and even the trials mode) is equippedwith the well engineered, and popularswing-arm rear suspension.The frames themselves have beenredesigned, the principal differencebeing the seat post, which is now ver-tical. It has attached to it, at thelower end, a lug which provides thepivot bearing for the swing-fork. Thislug is extended downward to bolt be-tween the rear of the engine cradlemembers.A general cleaning up of all modelsis evident. The spindle clamps, forinstance, incorporated in the topbridge piece, now neatly anchors thecontrol cables.Worthy of note, is the rather strongoil pump which on the twin cylindermodels, pumps at the rale of 26 gal-lons per hour. The side of the tankis protected by a shield which providesan air space between it and the reser-voir. The reason for this is simply toprotect the pillion passenger fromdiscomfort caused by extremely hotoil, which is circulated at a terrificrate. Details, such as this one, havebeen given the closest scrutinizationon all AJS and Matchless models for1956.The new competition model Scram-bler, is fitted with a much improvedsingle cylinder 500cc ohv engine. Theflywheels of this engine are steel forg-ings, and the big end bearing is ofthe 7r racing type. An all new con-necting rod of robust proportions, isincorporated. Also, in addition to thenormal method of supporting thecrankshafts, an additional large rollerbearing is provided on the timing side.The pushrod tubes are incorporated inthe cylinder casting. Even with thelarge bore of the cylinder, the finningprovided, is exceptionally generous.The new 500cc engine has a boreof 86 mm and a stroke of 85 mm. Thiscversquare designs is reported to de-velop approximately 39 B.H.P.For the American market, both theClubman Twins, and the Sport Twinswill be equipped with the new 600ccengines. Also, the popular SportTwins, with alloy fenders, 21 inchfront wheel, and 3 gallon chromesports tank; will be available.So with the introduction of the600cc twins, A.M.C. makes a strongoffer for acceptance by those who de-sire the spirited performance of largecapacity rtwins, coupled with superbhandling qualities and moderateweight.
