This antique leather box for men\'s shirt collars, cuff and cuff-links is dated Patent May 27 1890. Leather beautifully stamped with butterfly motifs. Felt interior lining in very good condition with inner form for collars still very much intact. Decorative locket hinged compartment on top for cuff links and handle. Box measures 10 inches X 7 1/4 inch and is 6 inches tall.The top piece hinge is loose but hanging on, some wear or leather loss to edges, front latch missing piece to seal shut and some discoloration at bottom edge. Overall, a beautiful 135 year old collar and cuff box.
Designed for holding a starched high collar, the patent for the 1890 collar box was issued toTheodore Springmeyer,patent number 428866, officially granted on May 27, 1890.According to the patent, Springmeyer was the inventor, but he assigned the patent to John Mehl & Co. of New York. The box was designed to hold men\'s detachable shirt collars, a common accessory at the time.
