Original U.S. Naval Campaign West Indies 1898 medal, commonly known as a Sampson Medal, named on the edge to Tsunehiro Arimoto.
The medal commemorates U.S. naval service during the Spanish-American War and features the distinctive cross-shaped design with anchor and wreath at center. The obverse is inscribed “U.S. Naval Campaign West Indies / Special Meritorious Service / 1898.”
Most importantly, this example is recipient-named along the edge. The inscription appears to read:
“TSUNEHIRO ARIMOTO … STD. TO C. IN C.”
The named attribution makes this a particularly interesting example and offers significant potential for additional historical and naval research into Arimoto and his service.
Complete with its red ribbon and period brooch/pin suspension. The medal exhibits dark original-looking patina with areas of blue-green oxidation/verdigris, particularly along the raised lettering and edges. Ribbon and suspension show age and wear consistent with an antique military decoration.
