4 Vintage Japanese Creative Sosaku Kokeshi Dolls Lot Tomio Ishida Usaburo Signed:
$31.26

For sale is an exquisite collection of four vintage Japanese Creative Kokeshi Dolls (Sosaku Kokeshi), dating from the mid-to-late Showa Era (1960s–1980s). These dolls represent the pinnacle of mid-century Japanese modern craft design, showcasing an imaginative departure from strict traditional forms into individualistic folk art. Handcrafted from premium regional woods, each piece displays unique carving techniques, intricate hand-painted detailing, and a beautiful natural honey-toned wood patina. This curated assembly features pieces from some of the most celebrated master artisans of the creative movement:
• Girl with Green Parasol: Designed by Ishida Waichi, featuring a vibrant red kimono and an attached green floral wagasa (parasol) mounted on a wooden block base.
• Blonde Wood Girl: A signed masterpiece by Tomio Ishida, showing delicate red and white plum blossoms (ume) on a light wood grain kimono, topped with a pink bow.
• Hana-chan (Flower Girl): A highly sought-after design by Tomio Ishida, featuring striking flared sleeves, etched vertical hair lines, and a signature incised on the underside.
• Black Kimono Girl: Crafted by the world-famous Usaburo Kokeshi workshop, featuring a distinct red-and-white patterned top-bun and a classic kasuri grid kimono pattern with a pristine workshop stamp on the bottom.
Measurements:
• Heights: Range from approximately 4.75 inches to 6.5 inches (12 cm to 16.5 cm).
• Widths: Average between 2.5 inches to 3.5 inches (6.4 cm to 9 cm).Creative Kokeshi dolls from this golden era of mid-century craftsmanship are increasingly scarce.
Unlike mass-produced souvenir variants, these specific models were turned and painted by hand in independent artisan studios. The inclusion of two distinct, authenticated works by Tomio Ishida—complete with highly legible stamps and incised signatures—makes this group exceptionally desirable for serious collectors.
Their intact hair ornaments, vibrant paint layers, and clear maker marks elevate their collectability significantly.Good vintage condition. The wood shows a lovely natural aging with minimal wear. Paint and lacquer remain bright with no significant chipping, some marks from age.
All bows and accessories are securely attached.
Please review the detailed photos showing the undersides to verify the authentic markings and signatures.
