Stunning antique indigo Lone Star quilt from the historic Moore estate in Franklin, Simpson County, Kentucky. This quilt dates to the late 1870s to early 1880s. It belonged to Randolph Gilbert Moore (1874-1939) and is inked RGM on the back corner, matching his initials, along with a second set of initials, DRD. Nine complex hand-quilted Mathematical Star (Lone/LeMoyne/Blazing Star) blocks in indigo prints, tan, and cream, set with deep indigo utility calico sashing and a floral border. One of my favorite details is the top header edge. It actually uses a different geometric indigo micro print than the rest of the borders but coordinates perfectly! Cotton batting is very lightweight. It's entirely hand pieced, hand quilted and hand stitched. The stitch density on this piece is phenomenal (highly tight, micro-stitching throughout). I can’t even imagine how many hundreds of hours went into cutting and stitching this by hand. The precision in the diamond piecing is just incredible. You can tell it was made with a whole lot of love!
MEASUREMENTS: It’s a big one! Measures 89" wide x 86" long flat. It’s perfect for a Queen size bed if you want that long, classic drop with plenty of overhang on the sides. To give you a real-world idea of the scale, the bed in my photos is a California King. It covers the entire top of that massive mattress perfectly and still gives you about an 8-inch drop over the edges.
CONDITION:
This quilt has been kept in a smoke-free estate, and carefully stored away in a chest for decades. It is unwashed to protect the old indigo dye and original patina. The indigo is still deep and vibrant! For a 150-year-old quilt, it is surprisingly sound, strong and in fabulous condition but it’s not without light signs of age and use. The bold, intricate patterns do a wonderful job of disguising the few very minor flaws, which don’t detract from the quilt’s beauty when displayed or spread on a bed. There is some typical, localized fabric degradation/shredding on the tan star diamonds, where the inner white cotton batting is slightly peeking through. This is standard oxidation for 19th-century brown iron-mordant dyes. There is one small wear spot on the indigo geometric dot border fabric where the top layer has worn away, exposing the inner cotton batting. This does not go all the way through the quilt; the backing fabric behind it is completely intact and structurally sound. There are a few localized, faint brown age spots/stains on the cream background squares and on the solid cream reverse side of the quilt. The binding and edges remain in very good condition.
