ANTIQUE JAPANESE INDIGO E-GASURI BORO COTTON FABRIC - TAISHO TO SHOWA ERA (76.5 x 77 CM)
An authentic Japanese antique E-gasuri (picture ikat / 絵絣) and Boro (襤褸) patchwork cotton textile, dating from the Taisho to early Showa period (early to mid-20th century). Measuring approximately 76.5 cm x 77 cm, this piece beautifully showcases the intricate artistry of traditional Japanese ikat weaving alongside the rustic charm of practical hand-stitched mending.
[DESIGN & TRADITIONAL MOTIFS]- E-gasuri (Picture Ikat / 絵絣): The main body features dark indigo cotton woven with fine stripe patterns interspersed with delicate ikat pictorial motifs. The roundel designs display traditional auspicious symbols, created by meticulously resist-dyeing yarn prior to hand-weaving.- Boro Patchwork (襤褸): The right edge displays authentic vintage patch repairs sewn by hand with contrasting stripe fabrics. This patchwork reflects the traditional Japanese philosophy of \"Mottainai\" (avoiding waste) and \"Wabi-Sabi\" (finding beauty in impermanence and age).- Indigo Dyeing (藍染め): Natural indigo dye gives the fabric its timeless deep blue hue, showing subtle, organic variations in shade (Abrash) created over decades of gentle use and washing.
[HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF E-GASURI & BORO]In folk Japan, E-gasuri was highly prized for everyday clothing, bedding, and celebratory textiles. Craftsmen achieved intricate patterns by binding individual threads before dipping them in indigo dye baths. Because cotton fabric was a precious commodity in rural communities, garments were never discarded when worn out; instead, women repaired them repeatedly over generations using remnants of other textiles, turning simple utility items into unique works of folk art (Mingei).
