This beautiful Japanese full oban-size woodblock print was created in 1930 by the artist Koho Shoda
(ca. 1871-1946), a renowned Japanese artist associated with the shin-hanga (“New Prints”) art movement in Japan during the first half of the 20th century. European Impressionism influenced the movement, and its imagery focused on landscapes, women, and nature.
This elegant, understated print depicts a woman riding in a ferry on a rainy day, the boatman oaring the vessel beneath the wooden piling of a bridge. Rain falls in straight lines as a farmer with a hoe and a person with an umbrella cross over the arched structure. An attractive, atmospheric design with soft bokashi shading.
The print was made using the Japanese woodblock technique in the 1930s and printed in the 1930s - the Koho Shoda lifetime print. It is framed in a vintage wooden frame.
The print was published by Hasegawa/Nishinomiya Publishing, the publishing house with which Shoda works exclusively.
