\"He\'s Telling A Secret — Not So You Could Notice It\" — Antique Comic Postcard, Merry Widow Hat, c. 1910
A bright, boldly colored comic postcard from the Merry Widow hat craze: a gentleman in evening dress leans across a café table toward his companion, whose enormous plumed hat swallows both their faces entirely — hence the punchline. Champagne bottle, coupes, and a green-shaded table lamp complete the scene against a vivid yellow background. Red block-letter captions top and bottom.
Publisher logo (S in a circle) with series number S 376 on the reverse. Made in U.S.A. Divided back.
The card was mailed: one-cent green Franklin stamp with cancel, addressed in pencil to Miss Helen Shaw, Kansas City, Mo., with a chatty pencil note on the message side. Postmark is faint; the stamp and style date the card to about 1909–1912.
ERA: Divided back, 1907–1915.
SIZE: Standard postcard, approximately 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches.
CONDITION: Good used condition for its age. Corner and edge wear, light soiling and toning to the back, and the expected handling of a card that went through the mail over a century ago. Colors on the front remain strong. No tears noted.
