Description: A folky, squat Southern Stoneware Serving Pitcher, 8-1/2”H, Catawba Valley (NC) or Crawford County (GA) origin, 19thC. Rare form.
Wheel-thrown and wood-fired; a successful, compressed form with flared collar and pinched spout.
Applied strap handle with medial ribbing and maker’s thumbprint on lower terminal; otherwise unmarked.
Covered with a crude, drippy Alkaline Glaze in mostly olive green to brown tones; the base is unglazed.
Note: There is a fairly prominent kiln or production flaw, down the body from the rim; either from excess glaze/heat or perhaps a failed glass run.
Condition: Very Good++ overall with uncommon form and attractive decoration.
Rim shows moderate wear, rubs, glaze loss, etc, as shown.
Body with minimal handling wear; otherwise clean and undamaged. Inherent glaze, surface and firing imperfections noted for descriptive accuracy.
Handle is original and intact. No repaired damage or restoration work.
Base with expected wear consistent with age and use.
