Sourced from the legendary St. Joseph Lead Mine in St. Francois County, Missouri, this piece has the unmistakable "old stock" look. The galena crystals have developed a deep, dark, blackened patina over the decades—a natural oxidation process that only happens when a specimen has been above ground and passed through collectors' hands for generations. The host rock displays the fascinating, rounded oncolitic (fossilized algae) structures of the Bonneterre formation, which acted as the geological sponge that trapped this heavy lead ore millions of years ago.
