Hartford Connecticut
1791 Connecticut Comptroller’s Office
Interest Receipt
~ 7 1/2 X 2 1/2 inches
An authentic 1791 Connecticut Comptroller’s Office interest receipt, issued in Hartford on December 20, 1791, documenting the payment of four pounds, eleven shillings, and two pence lawful money. This receipt acknowledges interest paid on four State Notes, with the principal amount totaling £76..11..0, calculated through February 1, 1791.
The document records funds received of Ralph Pomeroy, Comptroller of the Public Accounts, and is signed by Isaac Welles, reflecting official state accounting practices during the early Federal period. The denomination is clearly stated in pre‑decimal British currency notation (£4..11..2), consistent with late 18th‑century American financial usage.
Displaying period handwriting, strong legibility, and honest age‑appropriate wear, this piece offers a direct glimpse into Connecticut’s post‑Revolutionary War debt administration. A scarce and historically significant example of early American financial documentation, well suited for collectors of Colonial and Early Federal paper, state finance, or Connecticut The Store is open!
