Description

A particularly attractive example of British aviation artist Bill Perring\'s Flying Fortress, published by the D\'Arcy Collection in 1994 and devoted to the Boeing B-17, one of the most celebrated American heavy bombers of the Second World War.

The principal print is numbered 600 from an edition of 850 and signed by Perring in pencil beneath the image. The composition depicts a battle-damaged Flying Fortress returning from operations in 1944, capturing the imposing presence of the four-engined bomber and the vulnerability of the aircraft and crews engaged in the daylight air offensive over occupied Europe.

The outstanding feature of the present example is the original pencil remarque drawn by Perring in the lower margin. Rather than merely signing the published image, Perring has added an individual sketch of a B-17 Flying Fortress in flight. The drawing is separately numbered 16/50, initialled \"B.P.\" and further annotated by the artist:

\"91st B.G. 1944\"

This inscription identifies the 91st Bombardment Group, one of the best-known B-17 units of the United States Eighth Air Force operating from England during the Second World War. The group flew an extensive programme of daylight bombing operations over occupied Europe and Germany, making Perring\'s specific 1944 annotation an especially appealing feature for collectors of USAAF and Eighth Air Force material.

The separately numbered remarque means that this is substantially more individual than a standard impression from the main edition. It combines a finished colour aviation print with a unique piece of original artwork in Perring\'s own hand, directly linking the image to the 91st Bomb Group.

Adding further interest is a second pencil signature alongside that of Perring. It appears to read \"Keith Linnes\" or similar. The identity of the signatory has not yet been established with sufficient certainty and no firm attribution is therefore made here. Given the aviation subject and the specifically annotated remarque, however, the signature merits further research.

An excellent display piece combining the visual appeal of Perring\'s aviation art with the considerably scarcer qualities of an original B-17 remarque, low 16/50 numbering and specific wartime Bomb Group association.

Notes

The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress became one of the defining aircraft of the United States Army Air Forces\' strategic bombing campaign in Europe. Flying from bases in England, Eighth Air Force B-17 groups undertook daylight missions deep into enemy territory, with aircraft frequently returning to Britain despite severe battle damage. The present print is particularly desirable for Perring\'s separately numbered original pencil drawing and its specific \"91st B.G. 1944\" annotation.
