Nova #1 – Eric Canete Marvel Hip-Hop Variant
A sharp entry in Marvel’s original Hip-Hop Variant series, featuring Eric Canete’s homage to J. Cole’s Born Sinner.
Canete takes the minimalist artwork associated with Born Sinner and transforms it into a Nova cover, replacing the central portrait with Nova’s helmet while retaining the stark cream background, thin gold border and gold symbol positioned above the figure. The stripped-down composition makes the J. Cole connection immediately recognizable while still working perfectly as a Nova design.
This is Nova #1, launching the All-New, All-Different Marvel series starring Sam Alexander. The story brings Sam’s father Jesse Alexander back into his life, creating the unusual situation of two Novas operating together while Sam is also serving as an Avenger. Marvel’s original solicitation specifically credits Eric Canete with the Hip-Hop Variant cover.
The issue was written by Sean Ryan, with pencils and inks by Cory Smith and colors by David Curiel. The exact Hip-Hop edition is confirmed by UPC 759606083534 00131.
This is worth distinguishing from the other Nova #1 variants. Marvel also produced a Chris Samnee retailer incentive variant, but that is a separate cover with UPC 00141. This 00131 Eric Canete edition is the Marvel Hip-Hop Variant.
I am the original owner of this comic. It arrived already bagged and boarded and has remained stored that way since purchase. It has never been removed from the bag, read, or looked through. Please review all photos closely for condition.
The combination of a #1 issue, Nova/Sam Alexander, Eric Canete artwork and J. Cole’s Born Sinner gives this book crossover appeal to Marvel, Hip-Hop Variant and music collectors alike. It’s also an essential cover for anyone working toward a complete Marvel Hip-Hop Variant collection.
