Original WWII-era U.S. Army “Snaps and Scraps / My Life in the U.S. Army” service scrapbook with an unusually concentrated collection of contemporary material relating to William O. Darby’s U.S. Army Rangers, British Commandos, Northern Ireland, Commando training, the Dieppe raid, Marine Raiders, and the wider Second World War.The front cover is hand-marked “Fort Adams, R.I.” The scrapbook also contains a period Fort Adams / Newport postcard, reinforcing that geographic association.Probable Sgt. Thomas S. Sullivan / Sullivan Family AssociationHistorical research has produced a strong circumstantial attribution of this scrapbook to Sgt. Thomas S. Sullivan, ASN 31056581, of Newport, Rhode Island, or to members of his immediate family maintaining a service scrapbook while he served overseas.Sullivan was an original 1st Ranger Battalion member (“Darby’s Rangers”), later served with the 3rd Ranger Battalion, and was killed in action in Italy on September 16, 1943.The attribution rests on several converging pieces of evidence:• The album is hand-marked Fort Adams, R.I., at Newport.• An April 10, 1942 Newport newspaper report records Private Thomas S. Sullivan, son of Thomas H. Sullivan of Warner Street, Newport, as having arrived in Northern Ireland.• The 1st Ranger Battalion was organized in Northern Ireland in June 1942 from American volunteers already stationed there.• Independent Ranger historical records identify Thomas Sullivan of Rhode Island as one of the original members of Darby’s 1st Ranger Battalion.• The scrapbook gives unusually extensive early coverage to Northern Ireland, William O. Darby, Lucian Truscott, British Commandos, Ranger organization, Commando training, and Dieppe.• One prominent clipping shows Darby and Truscott inspecting Rangers during Commando training. The historical image has been identified in published Ranger history as C Company, 1st Ranger Battalion, at Dundee, Scotland, on September 2, 1942.• Sullivan is documented as having kept a wartime diary and later serving as a sergeant in the 3rd Ranger Battalion.• Sullivan family records show that his wartime Ranger photographs remained preserved by members of his Newport family.Important Attribution DisclosureThere is currently no visible inscription inside the album stating “Thomas S. Sullivan,” no Army serial number written in the scrapbook, and no direct ownership document accompanying it.Accordingly, this scrapbook is being offered as attributed to / probably associated with Sgt. Thomas S. Sullivan or his immediate family. It is not being represented as conclusively proven personal property of Sullivan.ContentsThe intact scrapbook contains substantial WWII-period material, including:• Darby’s Rangers / 1st Ranger Battalion

Sullivan creates a substantial historical basis for the attribution.Historical source references supporting the attribution are available.Sold as an original WWII historical scrapbook with probable, but not conclusively documented, Sgt. Thomas S. Sullivan / Sullivan-family provenance.
