A fantastic hand tinted photograph of Jumbo carrying children whilst at London Zoo. The image shows Jumbo with his keeper, Matthew Scott.P T Barnum purchased Jumbo in 1882. The sale of Jumbo however sent the people of London into a panic as they viewed the loss of Jumbo as an enormous loss to the empire. 100,000 school children wrote to Queen Victoria begging her not to sell Jumbo.

The slide consists of two glass plates. The image is applied to the first plate and a second covers this to protect the image. The slide normally has a inner paper border and then the slide is then held together with edging paper.Please be aware that as the slide can be photographed from both sides the image in photo 1 may be reversed in error.
