An extraordinary piece of British heraldic history, this original hand-painted and hand-inscribed coat of arms patent on vellum dates to 1912. Issued by the College of Arms in London, the illuminated manuscript formally grants and describes the family crest, featuring a richly symbolic design that includes a squirrel bearing an axe, a pair of crossed keys, and stylized trees—each element explained within the decree. The Latin motto Felix Laborans (“Happy in Work” or “Fortunate Through Labor”) is elegantly incorporated into the design.
The document is authenticated by the handwritten signatures of three senior heralds and bears their corresponding wax seals—each sealed in its original 2.75\" diameter tin case, crowned with an embossed royal emblem and measuring 0.75\" high. The vellum sheet itself measures 25.25\" by 20.75\", beautifully preserved and suitable for framing or archival display. The presentation box, equally impressive, is custom-made in wood and clad in red Moroccan leather with gold gilt detailing, including the royal cypher of King George V. It measures 22\" long, 5.5\" deep, and 2.25\" high—an elegant container befitting the significance of its contents. Good condition with light age-related wear to the document. Vibrant and striking colors. Two of the wax seals have detached from the ribbons attached to the document. The presentation box has wear from handling. Please review photos for further assessment.
A rare and remarkable artifact, fully intact, and ideal for collectors of heraldic art, British royal memorabilia, or historical documents. It also makes a striking decorative piece in a study, library, or office.
