Doesn’t even look like wood. African Blackwood (Dalbergia melanoxylon) is among the rarest and most coveted timbers on earth — slower-growing than nearly any wood in trade it is now protected as stocks dwindle. Its heartwood is a deep, near-black umber veined with bronze, but in burl form — the gnarled, once-in-a-generation burl growths where the grain collapses into wild, marble-like figure becomes something closer to gemstone or marble opposed to lumber. This heirloom pen turned from that improbable wood and impossible burl is a small, irreplaceable piece of Africa polished to a mirror shine.
