Up for sale is a beautiful, highly collectible, and fully authentic pre-WWII Western Cutlery combination knife and hatchet set (Model BX). Produced in Boulder, Colorado, during the late 1930s, this set features the iconic interchangeable handle design invented by Harlow Platts (Patent No. 1,967,479, issued in 1934).
This is a matching, complete set that includes the detachable handle, the clip-point knife blade, the hatchet head, and the original tooled leather combination sheath.
Both the knife blade and the hatchet head are in exceptional condition for their age. They retain a bright, highly reflective factory mirror polish. The knife blade features its full, original clip-point profile and has not been aggressively ground down or misshaped by sharpening. There is minimal superficial handling wear and very light speckling, as shown in the photos.
The cream/pearl celluloid handle scales are structurally sound and firmly riveted. They show no major shrinkage or signs of celluloid chemical decay (outgassing).
• The specialized locking lever operates perfectly. The text \"LOCK - RAISE SLIGHTLY - SWIVEL TO LEFT\" remains completely legible on the metal gate. The handle locks up tightly and securely on both tool heads.
• The Sheath (PLEASE NOTE): The original leather sheath features gorgeous vintage tooling, tight stitching along the main seams, and functional snaps. However, the leather belt loop on the back side of the sheath is torn (see close-up photo). It is being sold exactly as-is to preserve its historic integrity; no amateur repairs or modern glues have been applied.
