The DC Comics character formerly known as Captain Marvel is Shazam. Because Fawcett Comics stopped publishing the character after a copyright lawsuit with DC Comics, Marvel Comics later trademarked and used the name \"Captain Marvel\" for their own unrelated hero. When DC acquired the rights to Billy Batson in the 1970s, they could no longer title his comic or market him as \"Captain Marvel,\" so they branded him as Shazam!
