Beautiful Vintage Tonalá Petatillo Pottery Pitcher / Water Jug
Origin: Tonalá, Jalisco, Mexico
Era: Mid-to-Late 20th Century (Circa 1960s–1980s)
Style: Authentic Mexican Folk Art / Mexican Ceramics
Dimensions:
• Height: 9-1/2 inches
• Width: Approximately 4-1/2 inches (excluding the handle)
About This Piece:
Up for sale is a stunning, highly detailed vintage Tonalá pottery pitcher featuring a wealth of traditional Mexican imagery. This piece showcases two distinct, masterfully painted animal motifs on opposite sides:
• Side 1: Two elegant, stylized long-neck water birds/peacocks nestled among large traditional daisies (margaritas).
• Side 2: A beautiful resting spotted fawn/deer (venado) tucked beneath a large fern-like frond.
The Artisan Technique:
What makes this jar truly special is the exceptional Petatillo work. The entire background is filled with an incredibly fine, tightly spaced white crosshatching pattern, mimicking a traditional woven straw petate mat. This incredibly time-consuming technique is done by hand using extra-fine brushes and is highly sought after by collectors of authentic Mexican ceramics.
The handle features a beautiful notched texture with crisp white brush accents, and the base of the pitcher is decorated with a striking white feather/flame border against the rich, local red clay.
Condition:
Excellent vintage condition! The clay is structurally sound with no cracks. The colors remain vibrant under a glossy, high-shine glaze. Please note that minor surface variations, glaze pinholes, or paint irregularities are completely normal, original characteristics of this style of hand-fired folk pottery and only add to its rustic charm. (Please see all high-resolution photos to inspect the condition closely).
Usage Note:
As with most vintage Mexican pottery from this golden era of folk art, this piece is being sold strictly for decorative display purposes.
