✨ Curated Finds: Vintage Department 56 Primitive Folk Art Set
Complete 3-Piece Artisan Display Collection — Circa Late 1980s / Early 1990s
Welcome to our Curated Finds collection, where we showcase items with exceptional character, craftsmanship, and a story to tell. Up for your consideration is a remarkable, coordinating 3-piece lot of oversized holiday figures and matching props: a 24-Inch Primitive Snowman, a Festive Christmas Rocking Horse, and a large Antiqued Gold Hunting/Post Horn, Discovered together at a local estate sale, these pieces are stellar examples of the highly sought-after, wholesale-only dealer promotional displays produced by Department 56 for authorized showroom windows and boutique retail layouts.

🎨 The History & Craftsmanship

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Department 56 collaborated with skilled artisans in the Philippines to create a premium line of large-scale, handmade folk art. Moving away from standard plastic or porcelain, these display pieces were meticulously hand-molded using heavy papier-mâché, wood, and composite resins to revive the soulful feel of 19th-century German antique toys.

Every element showcases authentic artisan handiwork:

Intentional Faux-Aged Patina: The pieces feature a heavy plaster texture undercoat and a specialized faux-aged \"dirty brush\" distressing technique. This includes the large metallic gold horn accessory, which was beautifully mottled at the studio to mimic weathered, historical brass rather than bright modern plating.

Bespoke Studio Paintwork: The rocking horse boasts an intricate, hand-painted Pennsylvania-Dutch style saddle blanket adorned with primitive birds, stylized flora, and festive red apples.

The Missing Mark Explained: True to the manufacturing of this oversized line, these pieces were never stamped or structurally embossed. Because of the heavily textured surfaces, they originally relied on gold foil or paper studio labels, which naturally dried and peeled away over the last 35+ years—leaving their beautiful craftsmanship and shared estate provenance to tell their story.

🔎 Provenance & Detailed Condition Report

As true, authentic retail display coordinates, these pieces have been preserved together and are being offered as an intact 3-piece holiday layout:

Primitive Rocking Horse: In exceptional vintage condition. The structural integrity of the rocker base is perfectly solid, the colors remain beautifully vibrant, and the textured mane and tail show virtually no shelf wear. A remarkably clean survivor.

Oversized Antiqued Gold Horn Prop: Excellent vintage condition. Substantial in size, measuring approximately 10\" tall and 14\" from the mouthpiece to the top loop of the horn flare. Features a beautifully distressed metallic gold finish with no cracks or structural chips. Comes complete with its original delicate gold hanging string perfectly intact.

Oversized Primitive Snowman (24\"): Structurally excellent with no crushing or soft spots to the body, carrot nose, or top hat brim. He comes complete with his incredibly rare, original separate hand-painted wooden broom. Condition Note: True to its age and store-display history, there is a notable amount of vintage paint lifting and flaking on the snowman\'s right forearm, hands, and lower leg area, beautifully exposing the gray papier-mâché substrate beneath. This adds a wonderful, authentic weathered character that primitive holiday collectors actively seek.
