Description:
Original mid-19th-century sixth-plate daguerreotype portrait of an older gentleman by Rufus P. Anson of 589 Broadway, New York City, dating to approximately the 1850s.
The unidentified sitter is formally dressed in a dark coat and waistcoat with a white shirtfront and bow tie. The brass mat is clearly stamped:
Standard sixth-plate format, approximately 2 3/4 x 3 1/4 inches at the photographic plate.
This example retains both original halves of its period case, including the decorative red velvet interior pad. The two halves are currently completely separated at the original hinge/spine, but both pieces are present.
Condition:
The daguerreotype remains clearly visible and shows age-related haze, spotting, tarnish and oxidation, including noticeable blue-green peripheral tarnishing near the upper portion of the image.
The case shows expected age-related wear. Both halves are present, but the hinge/spine has failed and they are no longer attached.
The daguerreotype has not been removed, cleaned, polished or otherwise disturbed, and the detached case has intentionally been left unrepaired.
