Offered here is an authentic mid-19th century Shaker medicinal bottle retaining its original paper label for “Extract of Bittersweet – Solanum dulcamara – D.M. – Prepared in the United Society, New-Lebanon, N.Y.”The bottle measures approximately 5½ inches tall.This piece was reviewed from photographs by Andrew Koutsoukos of Golden Gate Bottle sales, who stated that it appears authentic, dates to approximately 1850–1860, and that the condition of the label is excellent. He estimated the value at approximately $150–250.The label is especially appealing, with bold period typography and decorative border, and remains remarkably complete for a medicinal bottle of this age.New Lebanon, New York was the central community of the United Society of Believers, commonly known as the Shakers. The initials D.M. are associated with Shaker medicinal products from New Lebanon.A scarce and visually appealing piece of Shaker, medicinal, apothecary and early American history.Condition: Very good antique condition. Original paper label shows age toning, light surface wear and minor edge loss. Glass shows expected age-related manufacturing irregularities. No repairs observed. Please examine all photographs carefully.
