Merchants there supplied frontier towns throughout the Ohio Valley with manufactured goods, groceries, tools, and clothing. Steamboats formed the backbone of this trade, moving cargo efficiently between major river ports and smaller commercial towns. The shipment recorded here represents a typical mixed freight consignment destined for a regional merchant. The cargo includes:dry goods and clothing for retail saleimported groceries such as coffee and pepperhousehold goods like queensware (ceramics)ironware and agricultural tools including scythes, bar hooks, hay forks, and hoesSuch shipments would normally supply a general store or mercantile business, where goods were sold to farmers, tradesmen, and river communities. The goods were carried aboard the steamboat Statesman steamboat, part of the large network of packet steamers operating on the Ohio River during the 1840s–1860s. These vessels maintained regular schedules carrying freight, passengers, and mail between river towns.Bills of lading like this served several commercial purposes. They acted as a shipping receipt, a contract of carriage, and a document identifying the consignee responsible for receiving the cargo. Surviving examples provide a detailed snapshot of the everyday commerce that supplied towns throughout the Ohio Valley in the years just before the Civil War.
