Rare original Autograph Letter Signed (ALS) by Abraham Oakey Hall (1826–1898), Mayor of New York City from 1869–1872 and a central figure in Boss Tweed’s infamous Tammany Hall “Ring.”
Date: January 28, 1872
Place: Executive Department, City Hall, New York
Medium: 2pp. on official Office of the Mayoralty letterhead
Content: Hall writes to “Cox,” warmly praising his wit, sarcasm, and oratorical skill during a recent debate. He frames the contest as a banquet where “you gave the Puritans their dessert,” a line showing Hall’s characteristic rhetorical flourish.
Signed: Boldly at close, A. Oakey Hall
The letter comes with two accompanying portrait images:
1. A lithograph portrait of Hall (from Harper’s Weekly)
2. A later-life photograph of Hall with his distinctive beard and mustache
Hall, nicknamed “Elegant Oakey,” was a Shakespeare-quoting lawyer, journalist, and politician. As mayor, he became notorious for his association with William “Boss” Tweed and the Tammany Hall political machine, later known as the “Great Ring.” While Hall was eventually acquitted of corruption charges, his reputation was permanently damaged, and his name remains tied to one of the most infamous scandals in New York political history.
This is a scarce example of Hall’s autograph while serving as mayor, written on official City Hall stationery during the height of the Tweed Ring years.
