1938 Goshen Historic Race Track Photograph Harness Racing Sulky & Crowd NY For Sale

This silver gelatin print captures a vibrant scene at the Goshen Historic Race Track in Goshen, New York, on August 10, 1938. The photograph depicts a harness racing event, with a horse and sulky driver visible on the track in the middle distance, moving past a large crowd of spectators. The grandstand and surrounding grounds are filled with attendees, many of whom are dressed in the formal attire typical of a public sporting event in the late 1930s. Men are seen wearing fedoras and straw boater hats, while women appear in period-appropriate dresses and hats, reflecting the social significance of race day as both a competitive and social occasion. A gazebo-like structure, likely a judge\'s stand or viewing platform, stands prominently in the middle ground, a common architectural feature at racetracks and fairgrounds of the era.The image exhibits several notable photographic artifacts. Prominent orange and reddish streaks extend across the upper portions of the sky, likely the result of chemical staining, light leaks during processing, or age-related discoloration. The focus is slightly soft, characteristic of action photography from this period, and a faint crescent-shaped mark is visible in the sky near the top center, possibly a minor crease or emulsion imperfection. The handwritten inscription on the verso, in blue ink, identifies the location and date as \"Taken Aug 10 - 38\" and \"Goshen Historic Race Track,\" providing precise historical context for this vernacular document of American sporting life.
