This is a lovely bone china figurine from Royal Doulton, of a country maiden in the Georgian/Colonial Era, reclining on a bench with a basket of roses. She is named Midsummer Noon, HN1899 and is wearing a laced pink bodice over a white flowing chemise, and a pink skirt. Her light brown hair is styled in a braided crown, and her face is beautiful, with pink cheeks, lips, and lovely eyes, all handpainted by an artist. She was designed by master artist Leslie Harradine, this elegant piece produced in England during World War II in 1942.
Starting with 1927, Royal Doulton sometimes put a floating number to the right of the lion backstamp, which when added to 1927, gave the year it was made. Midsummer Noon has the number 15 next to the backstamp, so she was made in 1942.
HN is for Harry Nixon who was head of the Royal Doulton painting department and joined Doulton in 1900. Leslie Harradine worked with Harry Nixon. Midsummer Noon was not available for very long, only from 1939-1949. Part of this decade was during the war time concentration scheme in England, which lasted from 1942-1952, and limited or stopped most production and decoration of fine china so resources, like coal and workers would go towards the war effort. This means not many HN1899 Midsummer Noon were produced during World War II and for several years afterwards, so this is a fairly rare figurine.
Royal Doulton figurines were made in England until 2004, when production of Royal Doulton figurines was moved from England to a factory in Thailand.
Since Midsummer Noon is 84 years of age, I examined her closely with a high lumen light and found she is in excellent condition, with no cracks, or crazing, but there is ONE CHIPPED PETAL on the yellow rose at the back of the basket, which can be seen pointed out in picture #10. Please note there is a small, factory-made vent/firing hole located discreetly on the underside of the hat band (shown in the final photo), which was intentionally placed during manufacturing to allow air to escape during kiln firing. Midsummer Noon is ready to be admired and displayed in your china cabinet or on a shelf or your mantle! A real work of art and so beautifully painted!
She is 4 & 7/8 inches tall, and is 5 & 1/4 inches wide from side to side, and weighs 14 ounces.
