This powerful International News Photos Type I original photograph captures heavyweight champion Joe Louis raising his gloved hand in triumph following his June 25, 1948 rematch with Jersey Joe Walcott at Yankee Stadium in New York. Still wearing his trunks and boxing shoes and surrounded by members of his corner, Louis stands at the center of the scene moments after successfully defending the heavyweight championship. The image captures the immediate aftermath of a difficult fight, with the exhausted champion lifting his arm above the crowd around him. Their rematch followed a controversial December 1947 meeting in which Walcott had knocked Louis down twice before Louis retained the title by a disputed split decision.
