For Sale is a Captivating 1948 Joe Louis PSA Type 1 Original Photo! This powerful International News Photos Type I original photograph captures heavyweight champion Joe Louis raising his gloved hand in triumph following his June 25, 1948 rematch with Jersey Joe Walcott at Yankee Stadium in New York. Still wearing his trunks and boxing shoes and surrounded by members of his corner, Louis stands at the center of the scene moments after successfully defending the heavyweight championship. The image captures the immediate aftermath of a difficult fight, with the exhausted champion lifting his arm above the crowd around him. Their rematch followed a controversial December 1947 meeting in which Walcott had knocked Louis down twice before Louis retained the title by a disputed split decision. The second fight gave the champion an opportunity to settle the rivalry decisively.

Walcott again proved a formidable opponent and dropped Louis in the third round, but the Brown Bomber remained patient before turning the fight dramatically in the 11th round. Louis trapped Walcott and unleashed the devastating combination punching that had defined his championship reign, knocking him out to retain the world heavyweight title. The victory represented Louis’ 25th and final successful defense of the heavyweight championship, concluding a record-setting reign that had begun when he defeated James J. Braddock in 1937. Louis initially retired the following year as champion, ending a continuous title reign of nearly twelve years. This photograph therefore captures more than another victory, it preserves the immediate celebration following the last successful title defense of Joe Louis’ historic heavyweight reign.

The Photo is 8x10in and is Authenticated and Encapsulated by PSA as a Type 1 Original Photo! The raised glove gives this photograph particular historical weight. Louis had spent more than a decade carrying the heavyweight championship, surviving challengers and establishing the longest continuous heavyweight title reign in boxing history. Here, surrounded by his corner after stopping Walcott, the Brown Bomber raises his arm following what would prove to be his final victory as reigning heavyweight champion. As a Type I news photograph made for contemporary press use, the image provides a direct photographic connection to the closing chapter of one of boxing’s defining championship runs.
