1966–1976 Chinese Cultural Revolution

Chairman Mao Goes to Anyuan Porcelain Portrait Badge

毛主席去安源 瓷质像章

GBCA MS67 | Certified No. 5110107419

A distinctive Cultural Revolution-era porcelain portrait badge depicting Chairman Mao Zedong in the celebrated “Mao Goes to Anyuan” (毛主席去安源) imagery.

Unlike the mass-produced aluminum Mao badges that characterized much of the Cultural Revolution, this example was manufactured in porcelain, allowing Mao’s portrait to appear in full color against a white glazed surface.

Certified by GBCA at MS67, this is an unusually well-preserved example of a politically and historically significant form of Chinese revolutionary memorabilia.

The Story

Mao Goes to Anyuan

The imagery used on this badge originates from one of the most recognizable works of political art from the Cultural Revolution era: 《毛主席去安源》 — “Chairman Mao Goes to Anyuan.”

The scene commemorates Mao Zedong’s connection with the early Chinese Communist labor movement and, in particular, revolutionary organizing associated with the Anyuan coal miners during the early 1920s.

During the Cultural Revolution, the Anyuan story was elevated into an important part of Mao’s revolutionary narrative.

The famous image portrayed a youthful Mao as a determined revolutionary figure embarking upon his mission to mobilize workers. Reproductions of the image appeared in posters, prints, publications, household objects, and political badges throughout China.

This porcelain badge reflects that extraordinary period when political iconography became embedded in everyday material culture.

⸻

Porcelain Mao Badges

Hundreds of millions of Mao badges were produced during the Cultural Revolution, with aluminum and other metals accounting for the overwhelming majority.

Porcelain examples represent a visually distinctive branch of Mao badge production.

Porcelain permitted:

* Full-color portraiture

* A smooth glazed surface

* More painterly representations of Mao

* Greater visual resemblance to contemporary propaganda paintings

The fragile nature of porcelain also means that intact surviving examples with their original pin mechanisms are particularly appealing to collectors of Cultural Revolution material culture.

⸻

Obverse

The obverse features a color portrait of Mao Zedong, shown wearing a green Chinese tunic.

Below the portrait appears:

毛主席去安源

“Chairman Mao Goes to Anyuan”

The composition reflects the celebrated Anyuan revolutionary imagery that became widely reproduced during the Cultural Revolution.

⸻

Reverse

The reverse retains its metal pin assembly for attachment to clothing.

A red production or maker’s mark is visible on the porcelain surface.

Age-related discoloration and surface traces are visible on the reverse, consistent with the historical nature and construction of the object.

Historical Context

The Cultural Revolution, lasting from 1966 to 1976, produced one of the largest bodies of political material culture of the twentieth century.

Mao badges were worn on clothing and displayed as expressions of political identification, revolutionary participation, and loyalty to Mao Zedong.

Today these objects are collected not merely as badges, but as physical witnesses to a transformative and turbulent period of modern Chinese history.

This porcelain example preserves both the political iconography and manufacturing culture of that era.
