WOS Antiques presents an antique Mexican devotional ex-voto painting, inscribed December 1889, featuring the name Ana Molina de Martínez.
This evocative religious folk painting depicts an elaborate devotional interior with a crucifix, sacred figures, furnishings, and a female figure. Ornamental lettering prominently identifies Ana Molina de Martínez, while a handwritten Spanish inscription refers to an event in December 1889.
Ex-voto paintings, also known as retablos, were traditionally commissioned as expressions of gratitude for answered prayers, miraculous recoveries, or divine intervention. These deeply personal works offer fascinating insights into Mexican religious traditions and everyday life during the 19th century.
Painted in oil on a magnetic metal panel, this work retains its gold-toned wooden frame with a rich burgundy velvet surround.
