Antique circa 1910s Coast Match No. 1 “Non-Poisonous Double Dip” matchbox associated with the Coast Match Co. of Los Angeles, California, and marked on the side for The Diamond Match Co.
Coast Match Co. was an early Los Angeles, California match company, making this an interesting piece of early California commercial and match-manufacturing history.
The original cardboard slide box retains a substantial number of its original wooden matches. The matches feature distinctive two-part “Double Dip” heads, with visibly different layers at the tips.
The colorful box is prominently marked:
THE COAST MATCH
1
NON-POISONOUS
DOUBLE DIP
The side carries The Diamond Match Co. marking.
Dating to approximately the 1910s, this is an unusual surviving early California matchbox. Particularly desirable is the survival of the original box together with many of its original Double Dip matches rather than an empty box or label alone.
The box shows expected age-related wear, toning and some staining, while the advertising graphics remain strong and clearly readable. Many of the original matches remain inside.
An excellent collectible for enthusiasts of antique matches, matchboxes, Diamond Match Co., Coast Match Co., California advertising and early Los Angeles history.
