(Item Description) Antique Black Japanned Metal Tole Tray 16¾\" x 14\" Raised Floral Gilt Decor
ANTIQUE / VINTAGE BLACK JAPANNED METAL TOLE TRAY — RAISED FLORAL & GILT DECORATION
Offered is an unusual black japanned metal decorative serving tray measuring approximately 16¾\" x 14\".
The tray features an elaborate black ground with gold ornamental border and scrollwork surrounding a central floral design in red, yellow, green and gold.
One of the more interesting characteristics of this tray is the dimensional decoration. The colored floral elements are visibly raised above the black ground, with additional height to portions of the yellow flower centers. The gold ornamental decoration around the perimeter is comparatively low-profile but can also be felt slightly above the black surface.
The floral and leaf decoration shows fine detailed work in portions of the design, while the overall surface has developed considerable age/use-related wear, crazing, scratches and areas of finish loss. The raised decoration also shows wear consistent with age and handling.
The tray is made of thin formed metal with a raised/scalloped perimeter. The underside is also finished in black and shows wear from use.
I have not attempted to clean, repaint, polish or otherwise alter the original surface.
AGE / MANUFACTURER:
I have not identified a maker\'s mark or definitive date, so I am offering this based on its construction, decoration and appearance rather than making an unsupported claim regarding a specific manufacturer or exact age. It appears to be an older decorative tole/japanned metal 16¾\" x 14\"
CONDITION:
Please study all photographs carefully. This is an older used decorative piece with substantial surface wear, scratches, crazing, paint/gilt loss and edge wear. The condition is part of the character of the piece. There may be additional minor imperfections consistent with age and use.
