Beautiful, genuinely aged 12.5"devotional Santo figure depicting a Franciscan friar or saint
Late 18th Century to Mid-19th Century (Approx. 1780–1860)
This primitive folk art piece features a wonderful, weathered patina !
The head is completely removable and rests securely on an original, historic iron peg inside the neck cavity. This traditional multi-piece construction is highly sought after by collectors of Spanish Colonial and European religious art!
The monk features a hand-carved tonsure haircut and wears a draped, cowled habit with a rustic dapple-pattern finish in brown and ochre hues.
The base of the sculpture shows prominent, historic hand-tool gouges and natural age checking in the wood.
This piece is in original, untouched antique condition! No repairs or glues have been applied to this statue. It displays heavy, beautiful historic wear, including flaking to the original white gesso primer layer and paint loss on the face and habit, revealing the bare wood underneath. The lower hands/attributes are missing as pictured.
Please review all photos carefully as they serve as the primary description of the item's magnificent weathered patina.
To ensure this delicate piece arrives safely, it will be professionally packed using a multi-layer method. The head will be detached and wrapped separately in unprinted archival tissue paper to protect the flaking gesso, followed by generous bubble wrapping and secure double-boxing. Fully insured shipping.
