For sale is an authentic, rare 19th-century American double-sided folding "Union Case" containing two original antique civilian portraits dating from the 1850s to 1860s (Civil War era).
The protective folding case is crafted from early thermoplastic shellac/wood-fiber composition and features intricate, deeply molded geometric scroll frameworks decorating both exterior faces. Inside, it houses a double portrait of a man and a woman in formal mid-Victorian civilian attire. Both images are beautifully encased in original, ornate stamped gilt brass protective mats and preservers under protective glass.
Condition:
This 19th-century artifact is in genuine antique condition and is being sold exactly "as-is." The thermoplastic case remains intact with beautiful, crisp exterior relief details. The structural metal hinges hold securely. The interior images exhibit typical aging, including minor surface dust, silvering/oxidation flakes along the plate borders, and general age-appropriate patina as shown in the photographs.
