Antique German/Austrian Majolica Cigar set with Match Holder/Figurine Monk with Beer Stein c.1890s
: : An interesting and unusual ceramic majolica hand-painted figural cigar and match holder featuring a monk in his brown habit with a hood.
The monk is holding a very large beer stein. This might be a version of the most famous Munich Child - the symbol of the city of Munich for many centuries. Or maybe not - monks in German culture were always associated with beer brewing and drinking. The association is positive - it was mostly presented as a \"joie de vivre\" lifestyle.
In any case - this is a very beautiful figurine with lots of character.
Made in the 1880s - 1890s. No manufacturer\'s marks, just model number 2072 and number 44 - probably the control number. This type of majolica was mostly made in Austria - there were several factories producing majolica figurines, plaques, and beer steins for Austrian and German markets.
Excellent flawless condition with no breaks, chips or cracks.
It is 8.5\" tall with the base 6.5\" by 5.5\".
