ANTIQUE NATIVE AMERICAN / GREAT BASIN STYLE LIDDED COILED BASKET
Offered is a beautiful old lidded coiled basket measuring approximately 8 1/2 inches wide by 6 1/2 inches tall including the lid.
This unusual basket has a rounded bowl-shaped body, substantial wrapped rim and distinctive fitted high domed/conical lid constructed in concentric coils. Natural tan, brown, reddish-brown and very dark fibers create geometric bands and repeating vertical designs around the body, with corresponding decoration on the lid.
The basket displays considerable age, surface character and natural patina.

Native American / Indigenous North American basketry, Great Basin / California-Nevada tradition or style, possibly Washoe or Paiute, attributed.

Construction and appearance are consistent with materials traditionally encountered in Great Basin/California-Nevada basketry, potentially including willow and other prepared plant fibers. Provenance prior to the present ownership is condition with age-related wear and patina. Visible wear includes scattered stitch/fiber loss, splitting and fraying of wrapping material, small exposed areas of the underlying foundation and natural discoloration. There is noticeable wear in portions of the interior and exterior weaving.
The lid and basket remain visually impressive and display well. Please examine ALL photographs carefully, especially the close-up photographs, as they constitute an important part of the condition description.
Natural irregularities in shape, coloration and weaving are consistent with handmade basketry.
