This is a genuine antique lusterware bowl by the Takito Company of Nagoya, Japan, a respected ceramics maker that operated from 1880 to 1948. Based on the mark and decoration style, this piece dates to approximately the 1920s-1930s, the golden era of Japanese export lusterware.
The bowl measures 10 inches in diameter and stands 5.5 inches tall. The exterior is finished in a rich blue luster glaze and hand-painted with a classic cherry blossom motif: white and orange blossoms with golden-yellow buds along black branch work, a design closely associated with Takito\'s finest lusterware production. The interior features the iridescent mother-of-pearl luster finish that gives lusterware its name and its signature glow. A hand-painted gilt band with wave and geometric detailing wraps the rim where interior meets exterior.
The base is marked with Takito\'s signature \"TT\" in a double diamond, along with \"Hand Painted\" and \"Made in Japan,\" clearly identifying the maker and confirming this as genuine period export ware rather than a later reproduction.
Lusterware like this was produced using a technique that applies a thin metallic oxide glaze, fired to create the iridescent rainbow sheen seen on the interior surface. Takito was one of several Nagoya-area workshops producing high-quality lusterware for the Western export market during the interwar period, and their cherry blossom patterns remain especially popular with collectors today.
Condition: Very good overall. There is one stable hairline crack on the interior on one side, visible on close inspection but not affecting structural integrity. It does not extend to the rim or base. The exterior luster and hand-painted decoration are vibrant, the gilt trim is intact, and the interior luster is otherwise excellent.
A wonderful piece for collectors of Japanese lusterware, Takito pottery, or Art Deco-era Asian export ceramics. Displays beautifully on a shelf or in a china cabinet, or can be used as a decorative serving bowl.
