ANTIQUE ODD FELLOWS LODGE NO. 48 GROUP PHOTOGRAPH
Attributed to Osgood Lodge No. 48 — Portsmouth, New Hampshire
Circa 1900–1915
Exceptional original early 20th-century fraternal photograph showing six formally dressed men posed in elaborate ceremonial regalia.
Five of the men wear matching diagonal ceremonial sashes prominently displaying the number “48.” The seated central figure wears especially impressive embroidered and fringed ceremonial regalia decorated with stars and other symbolic ornamentation.
The photograph was acquired in New Hampshire.
Historical records document Osgood Lodge No. 48, Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.), Portsmouth, New Hampshire, making this an especially interesting possible identification.
A 1905 Portsmouth directory records Osgood Lodge No. 48 as having been instituted in 1868 and having approximately 350 members at that time.
Based upon the New Hampshire provenance, prominently displayed Lodge No. 48 insignia, period appearance and fraternal regalia, we attribute this photograph to Osgood Lodge No. 48 of Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
This attribution is based upon historical research and circumstantial evidence. No names, lodge identification or photographer’s inscription are visible on the photograph or reverse, so the identification cannot be guaranteed.

The clothing, formal collars, suits, facial hair, photographic presentation and ceremonial dress are consistent with the early 20th-century period.
HISTORICAL INTEREST
Osgood Lodge No. 48 was a substantial Portsmouth fraternal organization during this period. Historical Portsmouth records document the lodge and its officers in 1905.
The repeated “48” appearing on five ceremonial sashes is a particularly important feature and gives this photograph considerably more historical interest than an unidentified fraternal group portrait.
The elaborate ceremonial regalia, excellent facial detail and relatively small officer-style grouping make this an especially displayable example of early American fraternal photography.

Webber as Noble Grand, Howard Anderson as Recording Secretary, Albert C. Plumer as Financial Secretary, and Edwin B. Prime as Treasurer. An older North American Odd Fellows directory independently lists “Osgood, 48 … Portsmouth.”

Original antique condition with considerable age-related wear to the mounting board.The photograph itself retains very good image detail and contrast, particularly in the faces and elaborate ceremonial regalia.The original mount exhibits edge wear, corner losses, creasing, staining, discoloration, abrasions and other deterioration consistent with age and storage.Upper corners show particularly noticeable losses and damage.No restoration has been performed.Please examine all photographs carefully.
