I'm pleased to offer this excellent ore specimen of Galena with Sphalerite from the Sullivan mine, Kimberley, British Columbia, Canada. The specimen measures 3.42 x 2.48 x .53 inches or 8.69 x 6.31 x 1.34cm and has been sawn and coated with plastic? or epoxy?
This is from the Erich Laskowski (1949-2020) collection of Tucson, Arizona. Erich worked as a geologist in Colorado, California and Arizona (chronologically) and collected whenever and wherever he could. He may have collected this while studying geology at Washington State University. I'm quite certain that he collected this as I had a tremendous large piece that I sold at Tucson last year that came with its original ore sample bag--he used these almost all the time when collecting ores. I was able to purchase the bulk of his personally collected specimens in April, 2021.
The Kimberley mine was discovered in 1892 by four prospectors and produced huge amounts of lead, silver, and zinc until its closure in 2001 due to declining ore grades and increased costs. The mining town of Kimberley was so named in the hopes that it would match the riches of the famed diamond deposits at Kimberley, South Africa. Over the course of its lifetime it produced more than $20 billion in metals and is regarded as one of the world's greatest polymetallic mineral deposits.
This piece shows banded sphalerite and galena and has been covered with a high gloss substance. My initial photos of this specimen in a vertical position in the bright Arizona sun were so reflective that one couldn't make out the banding but could clearly see my camera reflection in the displayface.
