Optioned in early December 2025 and in development by Peacock Network for Streaming TV!What a month for CLUE!
December 2025 not only marked the 40th Anniversary of the live-action film Clue -- an adaptation of the popular board game from Hasbro Toys that dropped in 1985 and which starred Tim Curry and Madeline Kahn --- but it also brought the timely news that cable network Peacock had optioned the property from Sony Pictures, with a scripted series already in-development by the platform. Dana Good, who recently wrote the hit film Wicked: For Good, writes and serves as showrunner for the series.
The game of Clue was created by a British musician during World War II in an effort to provide entertainment and distraction during the Nazi bombings of London. Inspired by his love of murder mystery parties and writer Agatha Christie, Anthony E. Pratt released the game, called Cluedo, in the United Kingdom commercially in 1947. Later that same year, gaming company Parker Bros brought the game to the United States, modifying its name to just "Clue" for American audiences.
Hasbro later bought Parker Bros, and it was under Hasbro that Clue became a staple of popular culture. But the property truly gained its reputation -- and depth -- from its cinematic adaptation in 1985. While billed as a comedy and filmed with three different endings that debuted at various theaters, Clue originally bombed at the box office. Its video release, however, turned the film into a sensation while its writers interpreted the film through a Cold War lens, exposing audiences to the deeper meaning inherent in the film.
The film's plot centered around a group of characters given unusual hue-inspired aliases, such as Professor Plum and Colonel Mustard, because they were all being blackmailed for illegal activities or indiscretions. Viewers learned that Mrs. Peacock was a senator’s wife who took bribes for votes and Miss Scarlet ran a brothel frequented by a well-connected clientele in Washington, D.C. Mr. Greenereveals he’s “a homosexual” who works for the State Department. Mr. Green tells his fellow victims of blackmail that he feels “no personal shame or guilt” about it, but he must conceal he’s gay or risk losing his “job on security grounds.”
In 2016, Hasbro retired the character of Mrs. White (portrayed by Kahn in Clue) and replaced her with Dr. Orchid. This marked the first permanent character change in the game's history.
Shortly thereafter, and perhaps due to the character change, IDW Publishing, which at the time had the license to publish various franchises owned by Hasbro including GI JOE A Real American Hero and The Transformers, brought Clue into the comic book medium for the very first time in 2017 with a six-issue limited series featuring the characters made popular by the boardgame and original film.
There's a lot more to much of popular culture if we did a little deeper. Perhaps that's the true mystery of Clue, a game whose victim is some greater truth of history that's killed and buried by unknown actors to prevent it coming to light in the present day?
A Must-Have for any collection and anyone on the hunt for Extranormal Entertainment.
Look below the surface. Dig a little deeper. And above all else, give your collection what it deserves today.
