DOUBLE KNIGHTIA sp. FOSSIL FISH PLATE – UNPREPARED – GREEN RIVER FORMATION – WYOMING
Offered here is an authentic two-fish Knightia sp. fossil plate from the Sandwich Beds / Split-Fish Layer of the Fossil Butte Member, Green River Formation, near Kemmerer, Wyoming.
This limestone plate contains two separate Knightia fossil fish.
The larger fossil, located toward the bottom of the plate, measures just over 4 inches long. The smaller upper fossil measures just over 3 inches long.
The limestone plate measures approximately 6.9\" wide × 4.9\" tall × 0.4\" thick.
THIS SPECIMEN HAS INTENTIONALLY BEEN LEFT UNPREPARED FOR THE BUYER.
A substantial amount of the original limestone matrix remains over portions of the fossils. This matrix was intentionally left in place so the new owner can continue preparing and exposing the fish themselves or have the specimen professionally prepared.
Both fish already have identifiable fossil material exposed, while additional areas remain beneath the matrix.
Some light pencil reference marks are visible around portions of both fossils. On the larger lower fish, pencil marks are present near the rear/tail area and along the upper side of the fish. The smaller upper fish has some pencil marking around the approximate head area.
These pencil markings are reference guides only and should not be interpreted as exposed fossil material.
Because this plate remains unprepared, I cannot guarantee the completeness of either fish, their exact condition beneath the remaining matrix, or precisely what additional fossil material and detail will be revealed during further preparation. That discovery is part of the appeal of an unprepared fossil specimen.
