Jean Francois Millet The Angelus Farmers Praying Field Antique Plate Rare:
$325.00

This beautiful plate was given to me by my grandmother, when I was very young (which was many years ago). I knew it was important and she told me the story. The deeply moving scene shows two peasant farmers pausing from their potato harvest to pray at the sound of the evening Angelus bell, their heads bowed in devotion against a misty rural landscape with a distant church spire. The Angelus bell was typically rung three times a day. A Polish resident described the frequent ringing as follows: At the hour of work it rings to remind them that God has given them the strength of labor. When it rings at noon, Poles are again reminded of the Giver of Temporal Blessings, and at night it calls for Expression of Thankfulness for what God has done for the people throughout the day. A picture of this plate appears in the Museum collection, circa 1900, about 10 inches in diameter. I have included a screenshot photo of that. There is a small line on the left side of the plate as shown in a photo. The hole in the back of the plate is for a wire to display on a wall if desired.
