The Kunz No. 12 Scraper
Plane (often referred to as a cabinet scraper or veneer scraper) is a flat-soled woodworking hand plane designed to smooth difficult, figured, or interlaced grain that would typically tear out under a standard bench plane.
Key Features
• Blade Width: Features a wide scraper blade measuring approximately 2-13/16 inches (or 2-3/4 inches depending on the specific production run).
• Angle Adjustment: Uses thumbscrews or adjustment wheels to fine-tune the pitch and depth of the scraper blade, allowing you to control how aggressively the hook engages the wood.
• Rigid Sole: Unlike a flexible card scraper or a Stanley No. 80 (which flexes the blade), the Kunz No. 12 holds the blade rigid in a flat cast body to level high spots cleanly.
Sharpening & Setup
1. Hone the Bevel: Sharpen and polish the blade bevel (typically ground around 45 degrees) on a fine stone to remove old metal and pits.
2. Turn a Hook (Burr): Use a steel burnisher to roll a tiny hook or burr along the edge of the blade.
3. Mount and Adjust: Insert the blade into the plane body and use the adjustment screws to gently project the hook just below the flat sole until it produces feathery-thin wood shavings.
