Scarce original 19th-century photographic portrait of Martin Luther, issued by F. & O. Brockmann’s Nachfolger, Germany.
The mount is printed at the top “BROCKMANN: Dr. Martin Luther.” and numbered 108 at the lower margin. Publisher/photographer credit reads “Photogr. u. Verlag v. F. & O. Brockmann’s Nachfolger.”
F. & O. Brockmann’s successor firm produced photographic reproductions of works of art and portraits during the 19th century.
This image reproduces the traditional portrait likeness of the German Reformation figure Martin Luther. Original albumen-era photographic print mounted on period card stock.
I am conservatively dating the card to the late 19th century, rather than assigning an exact decade without further documentary evidence.
Very attractive example with strong tonal quality. Light age toning, scattered minor spotting and surface wear, and expected edge/corner wear. Period numerical notation on reverse. Please inspect all photographs carefully for condition.
Appealing early photographic ephemera relating to Martin Luther, Protestant history, German history, religious history, and 19th-century photography.
Guaranteed original period photographic card, not a modern reproduction.
