Here we have a beautiful museum quality large Desmostylus molar fossil from the Temblor Formation in Coalinga, California. It dates back 15.5 million years ago to the Miocene. Desmostylus was a large hippo like animal that lived in and around the ocean. The tooth is in the original matrix that it was found, it's mostly composed of sea shell fragments. The root of the tooth has been completely restored.
