An amazing five blade Lockwood Brothers Mother of Pearl scaled equal end “Real Pampa Knife” with attractive filed blade spines and filed and gilded springs. Beautiful knife by an outstanding maker. The Lockwood Brothers “CX” mark dates back to 1767. The Lockwood Brothers (William, John, Joseph and Charles) started business around 1837. The firm seems to have ceased trading around 1919. I date this piece to around the late 19thor early 20thCentury.
Master blade measures approximately 2 7/16 inches long, edge only. Long pull nail nick. Rope filed spine. Obverse tang stamped “C + X Lockwood Brothers”. Secondary blade measures approximately 1 ¾ inches long, edge only. Obverse blade etched “Real Pampa Knife”. Obverse tang stamped identically. Long pull nail nick. Rope filed spine. Third blade measures approximately 1 5/16 inches long, edge only. Obverse tang stamped “C + X Lockwood Brothers Sheffield”. Rope filed spine. Fourth blade is a file with corn blade measuring approximately 1 ¾ inches long measured along the rope filed spine. Identical tang stamps to the otherblades. Fifth blade measures approximately 1 5/16 inches long, edge only. Long pull nail nick. Identical tang stamps. Deep luster, near Abalone coloring Mother of Pearl scales with carved rim, secured by three pins, obverse with oblong unengraved shield. Four easy open cut outs. Three springs, the central with six engraved cuts, the exterior two with elaborate filing and gilded. Fine gadrooned liners and spacers in brass.
Good snap to all five blades. No chips or cracks to the scales. Clean interior. Condition is quite stunning with only light scratching and a couple of stains to the blades. An amazing piece.
