Original real photo postcard (RPPC) from about 1910 to 1917. It shows a U.S. Navy pre-dreadnought battleship pushing through rough, storm-tossed seas, with a second warship following close behind on the horizon. The lead battleship has the Navy's distinctive twin cage (lattice) masts and three smokestacks, with smoke trailing from the funnels. In the foreground a large breaking wave fills the lower left, and the blur of the water shows how rough the day was. The photo was taken at sea, most likely from the deck of another ship in the fleet.
Cage masts were added to American battleships starting around 1909, which places this view in the period before and during WWI. The ship isn't named on the card.
The back is divided, with "POST CARD," "Correspondence Here" and "Name and Address Here" printed on it. The stamp box reads VELOX with diamonds in all four corners, a style used on real photo paper from about 1907 to 1917. The card is unused, with no writing, postmark or stamp.
Measures approximately 5 3/8" x 3 3/8".
Condition: Good for its age, with visible flaws. There is a notable piece of paper missing from the left edge, near the middle (it shows on the right edge from the back). There is one small brown spot in the sky above the ship's stern. Along the top edge there's a darker gray-blue band of toning or silvering, and the bottom edge has a thin line of the same toning. There are a few tiny surface marks and spots, plus a small nick near the center of the top edge. The back has light soiling, with a small spot in the upper left corner.
