The year is 1942 when this stylish Deco Airline radio, model 14WG=628A, flew off the assembly line just in time to beat the WWII moratorium for building consumer electronics. After a long and useful life (I actually found a repair ticket in the case dated 1987!) It fell into my hands, where it was meticulously and lovingly restored and outfitted with a wonderful, yet discreet, modification that makes it even more desirable in 2026 and beyond. That’s the experience you can look forward to after you unbox this handsome wood table set from Doctorvoltz, a longtime vintage electronics collector and radio restoration specialist.
Let’s start with the tastefully designed two-toned walnut cabine. First, the wood case was gently stripped down to the bare wood veneers and hand sanded smooth. Then, grain-filled twice with Timbermate grain-filler and sanded again.
Next, it was masked and tinted with Mohawk Ultra Classic nitrocellulose toners. Then, it was clear-coated with 7 thin coats of Mohawk clear gloss lacquer. After three weeks of curing, it was then hand polished using all 9 grits of the Micromesh polishing system, from 1500 to 12,000. Then, a new period-correct repro grille cloth and a clean and sturdy laser-cut back installed plus new felt feet to prevent scratching your furniture. Finally, the radio received two thin coats of Johnson\'s paste wax and hand buffing with a soft cotton cloth. The beautiful gold foil dial is original and pristine. The result? Smart and State-of-the Art!
Electronically, the radio performs strongly across the dial through its built-in loop antenna. There is also a provision for attaching a longwire antenna, as well. It has undergone a complete \"re-cap\" of all paper and electrolytic capacitors as well as having all out of spec resistors, mica caps and weak tubes replaced and all switches, contacts and tube sockets cleaned and the incandescent pilot lamp replaced with a bright LED version of the correct 3K color temperature.
Then, the radio was aligned by signal generator so that it plays accurately with plenty of selectivity and volume. In addition, all questionable wiring has been replaced or re-sheathed, the AC line cord is new and polarized and an internal inline fuse has been added to the chassis for safety.
In order to enjoy a wider variety of programming than is currently available on AM (really, how much baseball and political talk radio can you listen to?), I have made a small, unobtrusive modification to the radio so that you can play your Bluetooth receiver, iPod, phone, or portable CD player through it simply by plugging the supplied cable into the headphone jack of your device and the other end into the jack at the back of the radio. Please note, the pictured iPod and Bluetooth receiver are NOT included in the sale.
Unlike many “iPod” mods, this one is electrically isolated from the radio circuitry via matching transformer to guard against stray voltage spikes that could potentially damage your devices. It also is impedence matched to play your device at a similar volume level as the radio positions.

Please remember, although this radio has been restored to its original specs, it is still a vintage radio that employs vintage technology. At the time it was manufactured it was not subject to the tremendous amount of RF interference that is generated today from computers, flat screen TVs, high-speed cable modems, modern lighting devices, etc. Careful placement of the radio may be necessary to minimize audio interference
