📌 DESCRIPTION

This approximately 3-inch Task Group 130.1 challenge coin commemorates the historic 2020 deployment of USNS Mercy T-AH 19 to Los Angeles during the opening phase of the COVID-19 emergency response. The coin brings together the ship, its mission command structure, Navy Medicine, Military Sealift Command, and supporting service imagery in a highly specific design tied directly to the Los Angeles mission.

The turquoise enamel side is dominated by TASK GROUP 130.1 and incorporates the USNS Mercy T-AH 19 crest, Destroyer Squadron 21 insignia with the “Solomons Onward” motto, the Military Sealift Command seal, Marine Corps Eagle, Globe, and Anchor imagery, and the United States Coast Guard emblem. A ribbon at the right records March 23, 2020, the date Mercy departed San Diego for its Los Angeles mission.

The reverse depicts USNS Mercy alongside the Los Angeles skyline and Vincent Thomas Bridge, with LOS ANGELES, CA prominently incorporated into the artwork. Above the ship appears the quote, “This is the power of NAVY MEDICINE on behalf of our country,” attributed on the coin to RADM B.L. Gillingham, Surgeon General, US Navy. Together, the artwork and inscriptions make this an unusually detailed visual record of a specific modern Navy medical-support mission.

🧭 CONDITION & PHOTO NOTES

This Task Group 130.1 USNS Mercy coin retains bright turquoise and multicolor enamel, well-defined raised emblems and lettering, and strong gold-tone contrast, with scattered light surface marks and minor finish wear visible on the enamel and raised metal areas.

The oversized die-cut profile, deep relief, detailed service emblems, and complex Los Angeles mission artwork remain visually strong and give the coin excellent display presence.

As with most pre-owned collectible challenge coins, light evidence of handling, display, storage, or age may be present. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description and provide the best representation of the exact coin you will receive.

📸 Photos are taken under high-intensity lighting to highlight fine details, sculpting, and finish. This lighting may reveal minor surface characteristics that are often less noticeable during normal display.
